Dain Schroeder

Hey there, everyone! I’m Dain Schroeder, one of your humble reviewers here at App Girl Reviews. In addition to the rantings I post here, I am also a computer science major with an AAS degree in computer networking. This degree has proven most useful to me, as I now hold a highly coveted and prestigious job at my local Staples as a computer repair technician! Pretty hardcore, right? In my downtime from work, I spend most of my time either tinkering with computers or the wonderful little device in my pocket – you guessed it, an iPhone 3GS.

Top 10 apps:

1.) Must.Eat.Birds.
Must.Eat.Birds. is simply the best example I can think of when it comes to “bang for your buck.” The game has a terrific sense of humor and provides hours of challenging gameplay.

2.) Rock Band
As an addict of the console title by the same name, it’s no huge surprise that I’ve become addicted to the mobile version as well. I love the ability to download new tracks, and I appreciate the level of immersion that Rock Band has over similar iPhone rhythm games.

3.) Tweetie 2
The original Tweetie was an incredible iPhone Twitter client in its day, but Tweetie 2 is revolutionary. I hesitate to say that Apple themselves might not be able to come up with such a brilliant interface for tweeting on the iPhone.

4.) Worms
I was a huge fan of the entire Worms series of PC games, and when a version came out for the iPhone, I knew I had to try it – and I was not disappointed! Worms has provided me with many combined hours of time-killing goodness.

5.) speedtest.net Speed Test
As a computer science major and all-around geek, it’s often handy to know how fast my active connection is, especially since I have no data plan on my phone. This app does a terrific job of providing the info I need with the right amount of technical detail.

6.) Stick Wars
Simple though this game may be, I find myself coming back to it time and time again. This is one of those iPhone games that’s really a “must-have.”

7.) Knights Onrush
I couldn’t mention Stick Wars without also mentioning this very impressive game of the same genre. Knights Onrush provides gameplay similar to Stick Wars, but with a different (and quite unique) style that makes for a different experience.

8.) Tetris
“You can’t beat the classics,” they say – and in this case, they’re right. I’ve played Tetris for many years (all the way back to my original NES), and I’m glad to see that it’s lived on and is just as strong a game as ever.

9.) FieldRunners
I am the proud owner of many tower defense style games for my iPhone, but out of all of them, FieldRunners stands alone. The overall quality of this game feels like that of a well-developed console game, and that causes it to really shine.

10.) Tyrian
I wasted many hours of my youth playing the classic game Tyrian on my computer, so when I found out that there was a port of it for the iPhone, I was overjoyed. Incidentally, playing it on my 3GS is the first time I’ve played the game on its ‘ultra-high’ detail, which is a bit ironic.
