Big Buck Hunter Pro is a fun arcade shooter with just the right amount of red on its neck. The game looks incredible, and it’s a blast to play. It’s an incomplete version of the classic arcade shooting/hunting game. The app left me wanting more, and that is both good and bad.
The app is extremely well-executed. The environments and graphics are top notch. The grazing and running deer are realistic and smooth. The background forests and trees are beautiful. The audio is a great mix of ambient noise, gun shots, and an encouraging, sometimes derisive hunting buddy with a drawl. The visuals and the audio are pretty much perfect for the game, and exactly what I was hoping for. There is no gore, and any view of your weapon or impact points are lime green. Safety and decency first!
Gameplay is simple. There are no scopes, no zooms, no cross hair wobble, or drift. You tap where you want to shoot, and then tap to reload. Rinse. Repeat. It’s an arcade style hunting game, and it’s really fun. Did I have pinpoint accuracy when mashing my finger into the screen in pursuit of a trophy buck? Nope. Did that bother me? Not in the least. Speed and accuracy are required to achieve the highest scores.
The game includes three treks, and each trek has five locations. In each location, you’re given the opportunity to bag three bucks. Unless you cap one at the very beginning of the scene, the bucks are on the move. They will run in various directions, and behind various obstacles like trees or does. Shooting a doe ends the hunt in that location. The doe have an uncanny ability to come between your bullet and your buck. When you’re not bringing down bucks, you can shoot other critters like wolves and squirrels for extra points. Fewer shots, better shots and farther shots all bring you extra points. Getting all three bucks confers a bonus, as does getting all three bucks in consecutive locations. Scores are tallied, and stored on a leader board with arcade-style initial entry. You can play one trek or complete all three in one adventure with a cumulative score. There are also bonus rounds that require shooting ducks, bouncing frogs, or taking out gophers. They add to the fun and the arcade feel, and they can be played outside of the treks if you like.
The big drawback is the lack of other adventures. Once the whitetail adventure is complete, the only thing left to do is play back through the treks and locations, and work for a better score. The arcade version has several other species to pursue, and maybe these will be released as updates. I’m not sure if they’ll be free updates, paid updates, or separate apps altogether. As it stands, the adventure feels incomplete. Maybe the full arcade version was too much to ask for, but it would have been nice to have at least one more adventure to play through.
