Perfect Balance: Harmony

Earlier in 2009, Ttursas Lld. released a puzzle-based Flash 9 game on the PC that mixes Tetris, Zenga, and Issac Newton’s laws of gravity in a nice package. Perfect Balance was born, popularity boomed, and a sequel soon followed. An iPhone version was released, and here is the review for the first game of the Perfect Balance series.

Perfect Balance’s gameplay has tetris-like shapes above a dotted line. You must grab the blocks and make them fit on the static level geometry below the dotted line. Sometimes, you have a lot of levels to work with, or you will have just a small square block and you must put 5 shapes on it to make it fit. You move the shapes with your finger and with another finger, you may turn the shapes.

The physics engine is what makes this game so fun. If you perceive a certain, logical way to place the objects to make them stand, more than often, the shapes will stick. The levels can be difficult, but there is always a solution – if not several solutions. Playing a hard level one time let me come up with a different way to finish the level than my friend who tried it out. That shows how great the physics engine is. The engine houses 80 levels and 20 expert trials in a 99 cent package. Paying a cent for each level is great considering how rewarding it feels to beat a level. If the game is too difficult, you always have the option of unlocking to the next level. Be careful, as you only get 3 unlock keys.

The music is very soothing, in a dark way. It never gets annoying even though it is the same one instrumental playing over and over. The graphics are decent and have 5 backgrounds: water, sand, plant leaf, nighttime, and sky. You have an option to score your levels to see how fast you can succeed. I prefer to have scoring off so I can concentrate, because scoring feels like a rush job. You start at 1000 points, and it keeps going down 10 points a second.

There is an option to automatically put your Perfect Balance score on your Facebook status, as well as email a challenge to anyone who you know that has the game. Under settings, you may fix where you would like the shape’s position corresponding to where your finger is which is a plus, since you might like the shape under or above your finger. The game also has 9 hidden achievements.

This game is for anyone who loves to solve a puzzle. It is only 99 cents, and that is amazing considering how much you get from playing the game. It is great satisfaction to have Perfect Balance flash with all of the shapes glowing together. It saddened me to finish this game, but luckily, there is the sequel: the darker Perfect Balance: Inferno. I will be posting a review of that one soon. Highest recommendation for the first of the Perfect Balance series. I hope more iterations come out after Inferno.
