iPhone App Review – Wildcard Pro Surfing

Wildcard Pro Surfing is easily the best surfing application that I have seen on the iPhone. The graphics are phenomenal, and gameplay is challenging and engaging. There’s a steep learning curve; it took me several tries on Free Surf before I really understood how to execute the right moves. Once you get the hang of it, though, it’s actually really hard to put this app down.

Free Surf is exactly how it sounds; it’s a way to play on the waves and get a cumulative score without going through a competition. There are 4 basic types of waves to ride, and only one is unlocked at the start on Free Surf. You will have to learn to master this waves in the Compete mode before you can use them individually. Free Surf is much easier to play around on, however, because Compete mode can take a while.

Compete is a competition that pins you up against one other surfer to see who can get the higher score. You will surf 2 waves of each type for each competition, and you’ll receive a score out of 10 for riding the wave. Each trick you execute adds to your score, but you will have to master more than one to succeed. Each time you use the same trick in one wave, it is worth less points.

You will know your competitor’s score going into the match, so you have an idea of how well you will have to do. If your two scores added together are higher than your competitor’s score, you will move onto the next competitor. If you beat all competitors for a wave, you can unlock that wave in Free Surf.

The graphics of Wildcard Pro Surfing are extremely impressive. That’s one of my favorite parts of the game; it really can compete with the graphics of the best gaming companies. The controls are also very smooth and easy to grasp; you control your surfer by tilting the iPhone. Tilting controls both the direction you turn in and the degree of your turn. Just because the controls are easy to learn, though, doesn’t mean they’re easy to master! This game can get difficult.

If you’re looking for a great sports game that you won’t get easily bored of, Wildcard Pro Surfing is a great way to go. For only $1.99, you simply won’t find many games with this caliber of graphics and gameplay.  I’d strongly recommend it to anyone.
